Christian Petzold (script writer, director)

Christian Petzold was born in 1960 in Hilden, and has lived in Berlin since 1981. He first studied German philology and Theatre, then worked as a film critic and had several different jobs in television. From 1988 to 1994, he studied at the Deutsche Film und Fernsehakademie Berlin, and also worked as an assistant director with Harun Farocki and Hartmut Bitomsky. Among the films he has directed are: Pilotinnen (1995), Cuba Libre (1996; Promotional Award, Max Ophüls Festival 1996), Die Beischlafdiebin (1998; Producers’ Award, Max Ophüls Festival 1998), Die Innere Sicherheit (The State I Am In, 2000); awarded (among others) the German Film Award 2001 – Best Feature Film, the International Film Critics’ Award, Cannes 2001, Hessian Film Award), Toter Mann (Something to Remind Me, 2001); awarded (among others) the Fipa d’Or, Biarritz 2002, German Television Award 2002, Adolf Grimme Award 2003) und Wolfsburg (2002); awarded (among others) the International Film Critics’ Award, Berlinale 2003.

Hans Fromm (Director of Photography)

Born in 1961 in München. Studied Camera work at the Staatliche Fachschule für Optik und Fototechnik from 1986 to 1988, work as a freelance Cameraman since 1989. Hans Fromm has been the cameraman on all of Christian Petzold’s films. Among others, he has also worked with Thorsten C. Fischer (Blutroter Mond, 1999), Michael Hofmann (Der Strand von Trouville, 1998), Jan Ralske (Not A Love Song, 1997), Lutz Hachmeister (Hotel Provençal, 2000), Markus Imboden (Stahlnetz, 2002) and Michael Klier (Farland, 2004). For his camera work on Christian Petzold’s Die Beischlafdiebin (1998) Since Cuba Libre (1996), Bettina Böhler has edited all of Christian Petzold’s films. She won the German Film Critics’ Award 2001 and the Editing Award 2000 for her work on Die Innere Sicherheit (The State I Am In). Hans Fromm was nominated for the German Television Award, for Toter Mann (Something to Remind Me, 2002) he was nominated for (among others) the German Camera Award and won the Adolf Grimme Award.

Bettina Böhler (Editor)

Bettina Böhler has worked as assistant editor since 1980, and as freelance editor for feature, short and documentary films since 1985. She has worked with (among others) Michael Klier (Überall ist es besser wo wir nicht sind, 1988; Ostkreuz, 1991; Heidi M., 2001; Farland, 2004), Dani Levy (Du mich auch, 1986), Marcel Gisler (Die blaue Stunde, 1991; F. est un salaud, 1998), Ulrike Ottinger (Taiga, 1992), Hermine Huntgeburth (Gefährliche Freundin, 1996; Romeo, 2001), Henner Winckler (Klassenfahrt – School Trip), 2001), Angela Schanelec (Plätze in Städte – Places in Cities, 1998; Mein langsames Leben – Passing Summer, 2000; Marseille, 2004) and Sabhiba Sumar (Khamosh Pani; Goldener Leopard Locarno 2003).

Harun Farocki (Co-Author)

Born in 1944 in Novy Jicin (now the Chech Republic). He studied at the Deutschen Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin from 1966 to 1968. Farocki’s Filmography includes almost 90 films as a director, among them numerous essay films, documentaries and three feature films; he has also worked as an author, actor and producer on various films. University lectureships in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Manila, München and Stuttgart, from 1993 to 1999 visiting professor at the University of California in Berkeley, guest professor at the Akademie für Bildende Künste in Vienna since 2004. Harun Farocki worked together with Christian Petzold on (among others) the screen plays for Cuba Libre (1995) and Die Innere Sicherheit (The State I Am In, 2000).

SCHRAMM FILM Koerner & Weber (Production Company)

Founded in 1991 in Berlin by Florian Koerner von Gustorf and Michael Weber. Among their many internationally Award-winning productions are: Thomas Arslan’s Mach die Musik leiser (1994), Angela Schanelec’s Plätze in Städten – Places in Cities (1998), Mein langsames Leben – Passing Summer (2001) and Marseille (2003), Henner Winckler’s Klassenfahrt – School Trip (2002) and finally, Jan Krüger’s Unterwegs, which won the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival 2004. Gespenster – Ghosts is, after Pilotinnen (1995), Cuba Libre (1996), Die Beischlafdiebin (1998) and Die Innere Sicherheit – The State I Am In (2000), Schramm Film’s fifth production with Christian Petzold.
